Indefinite Suspension Of The Office Of The Leader Of The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) And The Position of Director Of Radio Biafra

IPOB Press Release

June 18 2026 | IPOB

As part of the ongoing actions being undertaken to reposition and strengthen the operations of the Biafran Self Determination movement being championed by the Indigenous People of Biafra, to make it more responsive to its core objectives, the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra after a meeting of the full house of the Directorate yesterday being 17th June 2026, resolved as follows;

That the Indigenous People of Biafra as the name connotes is a Self Determination movement of the Biafran people, and was formed and nurtured by a group of Biafrans in the Diaspora (not by any singular individual) for the freedom of the Biafran people and the restoration of the Sovereign Biafran nation.

That no individual of whatever rank or position has the authority or power to dissolve the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra which is the apex institution overseeing the affairs of the movement. Any such claim therefore of purported dissolution of the apex leadership structure of the IPOB global family is ab initio null and void, of no effect whatsoever and should be ignored by IPOB global family, Biafrans, and the general public and consigned into the waste bin for what it is, an effort in futility.

  • Having reviewed the intelligence report from the IPOB M-Branch regarding the meeting held a couple of weeks back between the operatives of the Nigerian State Security Service (the DSS) and the officers of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto prison;
  • Fully aware that every visitor, activity and communication of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu within and outside Sokoto prison is being monitored by the DSS;
  • Mindful that certain unguarded communications from Sokoto prison to those in Biafraland has caused unnecessary arrests and death of IPOB family members in Biafraland;
  • Cognisant of the fact that there is a plan afoot by certain individuals to set up a new militia through which a new round of violence will be instigated and unleashed in Biafraland;
  • Knowing that the foundation has been laid, and the execution phase activated for the eventual dissolution of the Indigenous People of Biafra freedom movement by the purported dissolution of the Directorate of State the apex leadership organ of the Indigenous People of Biafra;

Considering therefore the enormous responsibility upon the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafran to safeguard our operations and mission, protect IPOB family members worldwide especially those in Biafraland, and prevent any security breach or emergency in Biafraland, the Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafra has in view of the foregoing grounds

i. Suspend indefinitely and with immediate effect the office of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and the position of the Director of Radio Biafra held previously by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu until further notice.
ii. Affirm that the pursuit of our inalienable right to Self Determination is peaceful and nonviolent and must never be a ground to cause harm, hardship and death to the same people we are fighting to extricate from the atrocities meted upon them by the Nigerian system.

The Directorate of State of the Indigenous People of Biafran with all sense of duty and responsibility and in addition to the reasons adduced above, suspended the office of the leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra;

a) To prevent those individuals or group of individuals who hitherto are minded to commit crime in Biafraland, engage in criminal activities or carry out any actions whatsoever supposedly on the authority of the suspended office of the leader.

b) To prevent unchecked actions, reckless assumption of authority and unguarded utterances from resulting in the reckless arrests, torture and needless death of Biafran youths in Biafraland.

c) To halt and checkmate individuals and groups not affiliated with IPOB, who claim to derive legitimacy to carry out actions that conflict with IPOB’s mission statement. from the existence of the now suspended office of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Any such crime or criminal activity taken in the name of the suspended office of the leader shall not be attributed to IPOB but solely to the person or persons who may have instigated them. IPOB shall hence forward not be held accountable for actions of individuals or group of Individuals not holding any active position within IPDB or for actions of persons not authorized by the Directorate of State to act on behalf of the Indigenous People of Biafra Self-Determination movement.
